Dr. Parker enjoys treating children. With his kind, friendly manner, he has that special way of putting them at ease. At the recommendation of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, we schedule a child’s hygiene/cleaning appointment every six months to perform a thorough preventative cleaning of the teeth and apply a topical fluoride treatment, and as necessary, digital x-rays will be taken.
Why does your child need fluoride?
| The tooth is made more resistant to decay by the use of fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral like calcium or sodium. When used on a tooth, it makes the enamel more decay resistant. The best way to do this is by fluoridating the drinking water. In accordance with the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, we recommend the application of a professional flouride treatment at least every 6 months. |
Why does your child need regular digital x-rays?
| We feel it is our obligation to give the child patient the very best in dental care. To accomplish this goal we must have at our disposal all diagnostic aids, including digital x-rays and the intra-oral camera. Looking at the teeth alone without x-rays misses over 60% of dental decay. A tooth may even be abscessed without evidence of pain or swelling. Only an x-ray can show this to us. |
Why does your child need sealants?
| Sealants protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of back teeth where most cavities in children are found. Made of clear or shaded plastic, sealants are applied to the teeth to help reduce the risk of decay. The treatment is very affordable, especially in view of the valuable decay protection it offers your child. Additionally, the application of a sealant is quick and comfortable and takes only one visit. Research shows that sealants can last for many years if properly cared for. |
