Periodontal Therapy | Grapevine, Colleyville, & Southlake, TX Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontal Therapy Before and After

Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is the single most common cause of tooth loss in adults. It is an inflammation of the gums and other supporting structures that surround your teeth. It is usually caused by bacteria harbored in a sticky film of plaque that constantly forms on teeth. If it is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth, gums become irritated and inflamed. The irritated gum tissue can recede and separate from the teeth, forming spaces called pockets. Bacteria move into the pockets, where they continue to promote irratation. As the pockets deepen, it becomes impossible for you to clean the bacteria out yourself. Left untreated, the process can continue until the bone and other tooth-supporting tissues are destroyed. This is why it is essential to diagnose and treat gum disease in its early stages.

Recent research has linked gum disease to cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, and pregnancy complications including babies with low birth weight. The potential impact of gum disease on your general health is reason enough to practice proper oral hygiene (including regular visits to your dentist for cleanings and check-ups).
